“The opinions in this blog are mine alone and not the opinions of who I work for”
Sitting on the plane I am making the best of my time in the air. Completing emails, watching viral vids (for inspiration of course), and reading business/motivational books. Couple of my old stand byes are of course Crush it by Gary V, and The social media bible by Lon Safko…they are inspirational and industry related for me. Do you want to know what I really love about them? The first few paragraphs in the first chapter have nothing to do with sports analogies whatsoever! That’s right not a single football or baseball or basketball reference at all. How many speakers out there are missing some of their prime demographics?
Yes I understand that for them it is easy for them to relate to, half of the modern day motivational speakers are has been athletes, or HS quarterbacks that wish they just had that one more chance at the big game, and public speaking does it for them now, feeds that ego quite well for them.
If you ask me it is time for a couple of different analogies to start surfacing in this world of empowerment and business success stories. Talk to me about how as a manager you need to be like Aragorn, to rush into battle with your team. How if you show your passion in the fight even your smallest hobbits(green peas) will trust you and follow you into the heart of Mordor.
Or if you lead the life of looking out for your team you become Superman and Justice League (your sales people) will grab every tool on their utility belt to fight for you.
Now I know you may think that I am a juvenile comic book loving, techie geek… And you may be right on some level, but I think it is time for the inner Goonies in all of us to find some other way to connect with the new business.
So for all my fellow car guys out there who can equate their management style to that of Jean Luc Picard I salute you. Don’t let the Borg(old school car guys sitting on the lot saying how bad business is doing nothing to change it) assimilate you.
Battle on like Neo facing a thousand agent Smiths work smart and hard, be passionate about the world we live in and sell another car as if Zion’s safety depends on it!
And when change occurs, and you feel lost with the new technologies and customers that are facing you everyday…. Remember there is no spoon, you need to bend:) have a great night and good selling!
